Topological map induction using neighbourhood information of places

چکیده
In topological mapping, perceptual aliasing can cause different places to appear indistinguishable to the robot. In case of severely corrupted or non-available odometry information, topological mapping is difficult as the robot is challenged with the loop-closing problem; that is to determine whether it has visited a particular place before. In this article we propose to use neighbourhood information to disambiguate otherwise indistinguishable places. Using neighbourhood information for place disambiguation is an approach that neither depends on a specific choice of sensors nor requires geometric information such as odometry. Local neighbourhood information is extracted from a sequence of observations of visited places. In experiments using either sonar or visual observations from an indoor environment the benefits of using neighbourhood clues for the disambiguation of otherwise identical vertices are demonstrated. Over 90% of the maps we obtain are isomorphic with the ground truth. The choice of the robot’s sensors does not impact the results of the experiments much.

Topological maps represent the world as a network of nodes and arcs: the nodes are distinctive places in the environment and the arcs represent paths between places. A significant issue in building topological maps is defining distinctive places. Most previous work in topological mapping has concentrated on using sonar sensors to define distinctive places. However, sonar sensors are limited in ...
متن کاملLearning Large-Scale Topological Maps Using Sum-Product Networks
In order to perform complex actions in human environments, an autonomous robot needs the ability to understand the environment, that is, to gather and maintain spatial knowledge. Topological map is commonly used for representing large scale, global maps such as floor plans. Although much work has been done in topological map extraction, we have found little previous work on the problem of learn...
متن کاملTopological Relationships between a Circular Spatially Extended Point and a Line: Spatial Relations and their Conceptual Neighborhoods
This paper presents the topological spatial relations that can exist in the geographical space between a Circular Spatially Extended Point and a Line and describes the use of those spatial relations in the identification of the conceptual neighbourhood graphs that state the transitions occurring among relations. The conceptual neighbourhood graphs were identified using the snapshot model and th...

Models of the environment are needed for a wide range of robotic applications, from search and rescue to automated vacuum cleaning. Learning maps has therefore been a major research focus in the robotics community over the last decades. In general, one distinguishes between metric and topological maps. Metric maps model the environment based on grids or geometric representations whereas topolog...
متن کاملSome New-Irresolute and Closed Maps in Fuzzy Topological Spaces
Abstract In this paper weaker and stronger forms of fuzzy b-mappings are introduced and studied using the concept of fuzzy generalized b-closed sets which are named as fagb-continuous, fagb-irresolute and fagb-closed maps. Also fgbT ∗ 1/2 spaces, fuzzy b-locally closed sets, fb-homeomorphisms, fb*-homeomorphisms, fgb-neighbourhood and fgbq-neighbourhood are introduced and studied. Several inter...
